Canada formally abandons Kyoto

The words ‘disappointing’ and ‘embarrassing’ were some of the first to come to mind when the news broke this morning that Canada is the first nation to formally withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol.

While it is frustrating to think of all the positive change that could have been, Kyoto was less than perfect. Many countries were unfairly penalized for their greenhouse emissions, while other bigger contributors went without any accountability.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment of all is the lack of positive momentum. There are no real alternatives being presented which will lead to another few decades of the status quo. By then, it might just be too late.

It is up to us, the citizens of each country, to implement change. If every person took five minutes to examine their life, how much they consume and what small changes they could make, we wouldn’t need massive international agreements like Kyoto. The change would already be happening.
